About the Play
Every holiday season, family members gather and potential mayhem ensues... You think your family's dysfunctional?

Israel Horovitz described his memory play Unexpected Tenderness as “extremely personal, dark, funny and sad.” As Roddy Stern looks back at his working class Jewish family in 1950s Massachusetts, we see a family functioning well despite the shadow cast by their beloved—and pathologically jealous—father. But as Archie’s jealousy drives him toward violence, the family must answer a difficult question: When love is involved, where does one draw a line?
