The University of Minnesota is reportedly set to add a top young FCS coordinator to its staff, marking a significant development as the transfer portal opens for college football players. According to multiple reports, Isaac Fruechte, a highly talented offensive coordinator at North Dakota (FCS), is set to join the University of Minnesota's staff under PJ Fleck's leadership. Fruechte's recent recognition as part of the AFCA's 35 under 35 program for the 2026 class further solidifies his reputation in the coaching world.
This move is particularly intriguing as it represents a return to the program for Fruechte, who played for the University of Minnesota from 2011-14. His high school career at Caledonia HS (MN) and subsequent junior college experience led him to the University of Minnesota, where he honed his coaching skills.
Fruechte's journey in college football began at the small college level in 2018 as the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Wisconsin La-Crosse. He then made a significant leap to the FCS level, becoming the receivers coach at Northern Iowa for a season. His first play-calling opportunity came with Northern State (D-II - SD) in 2020, where he managed both quarterbacks and wide receivers.
Fruechte's impact at North Dakota was remarkable. In his first season with the Fighting Hawks, his offense ranked among the top 25 nationally in red zone scoring, third down conversions, time of possession, and rushing offense. The following season, his team averaged nearly 33 points per game, ranking 22nd nationally in FCS. They also excelled in first downs gained and sacks allowed per game.
In addition to Fruechte, the University of Minnesota is reportedly set to welcome back former Gophers running back Mohamed Ibrahim as a running backs coach. Ibrahim, who spent the previous season coaching at Kent State, is finalizing a deal to return to his alma mater.
Furthermore, sources confirm that former New Mexico special teams coordinator Daniel Da Prato is also joining the Gophers in the same capacity. Da Prato has a proven track record as a special teams coordinator, having served at Texas State and South Florida, where he also acted as the interim head coach for the final three weeks of the 2022 season.
